Do's. Don'ts. And Some Pointers.

Some people have been asking me on how can they avoid getting a returned manuscript.  Honestly, I don't really have a sure fire answer to that.  Since for me, hindi naman pare-pareho ang taste ng mga editor pagdating sa mga manuscript na binabasa nila.  One editor might think that this story is good enough to be publish, but another editor might think otherwise.  So here are some pointers as to how to lessen the probability of having a returned manuscript.  Hindi ko maipapangako na kapag sinunod niyo ang mga nakasulat dito eh sigurado nang makakapasa ang manuscript na gagawin niyo.  These are solely based on my opinion, so here goes;
  1. Grammatical Errors. Truthfully, PHR is not so strict on this.  Pero kung puno na ng grammatical error ang manuscript mo to the point na hindi na maintindihan ng editor kung ano ang pinagsasasabi mo, then that will surely affect the editor's judgement on whether she will approve your story.  So I suggest kung hindi ka naman gano'n ka-confident sa pag-gamit ng wikang Ingles, you can always use our own language. But avoid using deep Tagalog words, just used words that you will use in an everyday normal conversation.
  2. Characterization. Be sure that you are consistent in your characterization of your hero and heroine and even your other side characters.  For example, your hero was supposed to be cold and aloof, then all of a sudden bigla na lang siyang magpapaka-kengkoy ng walang dahilan.  'Wag sanang gano'n.  If he's cold and aloof then he should act like it.  Kung kinakailangan siyang magbago para umandar ang kwento, then do it gradually, 'wag mong bibiglain.
  3. The 'Kilig' Factor.
  4. Conflict.  Your conflict should not pop up out of nowhere just to give your hero and heroine a problem. You should introduce your conflict as early as chapter two or three, whether it's an internal conflict or an external one.
  5. Plot.  If you're writing a contemporary romance, then make sure your plot is believable.  'Wag masyadong out of the box na hindi na siya makatotohanan.  Although we're writing fiction, dapat meron pa ring toud of reality. Also, you should be able to justify the plot that you chose.  Dapat mapanindigan mo siya.  Your story should be consistent, you should not unnecessarily drag it on.
And that's it.  Sana makatulong 'to sa mga aspiring writers na makakabasa nitong post na 'to. Goodluck everyone!  Kahit makatanggap man kayo ng returned manuscript, 'wag kayo agad susuko.  Gora lang ng gora hanggang makapagpa-approve.  After all, we can all learn a lot from one rejection. :))

  1. Salamat dito! Anyways, revised daw 'yung pangalawa. May pag-asa pa haha!
